To grow up on the Monterey Peninsula is to grow up in a natural landscape captured and transformed into high art by such pioneers of the camera as Edward and Brett Weston. Tunnell was deeply impressed and inspired by these masters. After receiving a degree in graphic arts from the University of Redlands, he wanted to explore other markets and adventures. His work took him to Nevada, Chicago Illinois, Mexico and Europe. These places and work experiences were valuable and extraordinary, enabling him to appreciate the splendor of Monterey that much more.
